Radio's biggest audience is in the automobile. It was true then and still true today.
A motorist driving across the WJML signal area could be on the road nearly 3 hours
and never lose the signal. But when the AM signed off, gone was that mobile listener.
Along came the Audiovox converter. Now every automobile could add an FM
tuner to their car AM radio. The nifty device that could fit in the palm of your
hand mounted under the dash. It shared the same antenna as the AM radio so now
John kept that listener and the station began merchandising this new technology.
People wanted to keep listening because the programming was every bit as
informative and entertaining as any AM station. That was John's philosophy.
FM should be programmed like an AM station. Again John was ahead of the game,
no pun intended.
